Professor Bettina Aptheker (UC Santa Cruz) will present the Phebe Estelle Spalding Lecture “Let Us Join Hands: Feminism, Social Justice and the Scholar/Activist.” Aptheker will reflect on this historic moment, its intergenerational links, and the issues of economic justice, racial oppression, environmental degradation, LGBT pride, and the feminist aspirations that give rise to it. She will then consider how feminist scholarly work combined with political activism contributes to greater global responsibility and compassion. Aptheker is the author of How I Grew Up Red, Fought for Free Speech & Became a Feminist Rebel. Contact: pardis.mahdavi@pomona.edu or (909) 607-7854.
